#01: Introducing Huper - The Human Performance Technology Newsletter
A bi-weekly newsletter digging into incredible businesses at the intersection of human performance and technology.
Am I about to become another newsletter guy?
Who knows.
What I do know is I’ve spent the last ten years building health and human performance technology businesses, and another twenty years before that as an Olympic athlete. Most recently, I helped grow and bring a business to IPO on the Nasdaq at a >$1bn valuation, and guess what? Now I have some time on my hands.
With the luxury/curse of being idle, I’ve been digging around in my soul to figure out what it is I am truly passionate about.
I’m not sure why, but that’s the kind of thing people do when they suddenly find themselves without a busy inbox for the first time in ten years.
So, here we are…
What on earth is Human Performance Technology?
I considered where my real burning obsessions lay:
Sport? Love it yes, but I’m way down the rankings when it comes to being a real sports fan.
Health & Fitness? Close, very close. I’m passionate about building digital health products, but there’s something missing.
Mindset/leadership? Again, I live and breathe this, but it’s not truly who I am and what I obsess about every day.
Tech/entrepreneurship? 99% there. But every newsletter and his dog are writing about this.
I’m really into where all these things overlap.
And it’s that intersection that I’m defining as Human Performance Tech.
Here’s my take on where Human Performance technology sits - at the intersection of sport, health, nutrition and mindset.
Pressing go on Huper.
I’m putting all of this human performance content under the umbrella of Huper (pronounced Hewper). See what I did there?
I’ve gotten hold of a few domains, (huper.io, huper.tech, negotiating on huper.com) and there are some brand identity and social pages en route.
My aim here is just to have a community that cares about the great businesses that enable human performance for everyone - from beginners to elite athletes and to hopefully provide value to an audience that would like to learn about this stuff. That’s the plan for now. No monetisation, no online course - just me giving my take on businesses I find interesting in the space.
There we have it, I’m placing my content creation roulette chips on this niche.
I haven’t been able to find any other party focusing on this specific topic, especially from a business angle, so with a good tailwind, I’m hoping this will scratch a particular itch for a few people.
Here’s what (I think) you can expect from the Huper* newsletter
An initial ‘season’ of 10-20 newsletters, sent every other week.
A deep(ish) dive on a given topic or technology in the space.
For example, businesses working on next-generation wearables, Augmented Reality in human performance or smart nutrition, etc etc.
A look at the brands in each space, who’s behind them, what funding have they raised and where they can win.
The challenges they’ll face to be successful, and the opportunities for those that can overcome them.
A quick summary and links to interesting news in human performance that I’ve seen that week
Cool roles or opportunities in human performance businesses
*I’m reserving the tentative right to completely pivot, or abandon the Huper name.
I’m also building a live Airtable database of every brand I can find that I’d classify as Human Performance Tech - I’ll share this WiP soon.
Come on in, the water’s lovely.
